I have bought Mestemacher breads over many years and was always satisfied.Now something is different, and I'm considering returning this order: the bread crumbles into pieces right out of thewrapping. Difficult to hold and to eat as one part of the loaf seems to be missing a lot of the time. The loaf package fillsup with crumbs. Difficult to hold and to add toppings like Camembert cheese. The quality has gone downhill a startling amount.I would like to return this order and find another bread like the one I used to buy.

My first subscribe and save order of this bread arrived today. I never had it before, but it met my nutritional needs and the reviews are good, so I thought I'd take a chance and it was a good choice. However, there is never a way to know the expiration date of perishables we buy on Amazon until arrival, and such is the case with this bread. I'd asked a question about this and customers responded 6-12 months on the shelf. Well, my case just arrived, February 27, and the expiration date is 7-7-13, just over four months. This short for me as I don't eat a lot of bread, MAYBE a loaf a month, and when I do buy bread at the store, I never finish a loaf before it spoils. I wanted a pantry bread, not a freezer bread.Flavor is hearty, you can feel the grains; texture heavy and crumbly. I like it. I didn't expect to open and find the slices to be long across the top. The package is not resealable, so it's necessary to put it in something else once opened.About the expiration date: I talked with Amazon support about the expiration date and was refunded half the purchase price, which I didn't expect. This kind of service is why I come to Amazon to buy just about everything, first.Edited to add: You MUST refrigerate (or freeze, as some reviewers have suggested) this bread once opened unless you eat it within 3 days. My first loaf stored in an air tight Tupperware began to mold at that point. Good bread.

I love this delicious moist bread for sandwiches, particularly for tuna salad sandwiches.It’s a great value, stores well, and is pre sliced.I highly recommend it.

I’ve eaten several varieties from this brand in the past and couldn’t say that my palate can tell much difference between the varieties. It’s not your traditional sandwich bread and does take some getting used to for the chewiness. It was recommended to me as a very healthy whole-grain, wheat free bread. I personally enjoy it but I toast it for several minutes and flip it halfway through because I prefer it to be a little bit more sturdy/crisp. Sometimes I top it with hummus, or I make avocado toast and eat it with a hard boiled egg for some protein, or natural peanut butter and a banana. It’s definitely a textural adjustment and it is very chewy so if you do not enjoy whole grains and seeds, this is not the bread for you. I very rarely eat it plain.

If you like a hearty, earthy, sourdough flavor in your bread, then you would love this bread. It makes a great sandwich, toast with butter or cheese toast. My husband even likes it with peanut butter on it. It is filling and keeps you satisfied for a long time, in addition to you getting all the many health benefits of pumpernickel. We are on our 3rd or 4th order of this bread. It also truly stays good on your shelf for a long period of time. It is dense and heavy, so it's not like typical sandwich bread. If you only like fluffier, airy bread, then you may not like this. For it's perfect. We love hearty grainy bread and we love sourdough. This is a combination of both. It's delicious and a good buy, for what you're getting.
