How could probiotics still be alive in this?

It's highly likely that they're not and whatever does survive is highly likely to be killed by stomach acid upon ingestion. My understanding is that most probiotic supplements are virtually useless unless they're maintained in a strictly controlled (liquid) environment from beginning of manufacturing/packaging to when you ingest them. You're better off eating kefir or fermented foods to get what you need.
