Q: The item came packaged in what looked like a thin garbage bag, NOT vacuum sealed. Is it used? A return?

I am not sure about this, you might want to return it. Mine did come air sealed and in prefectly good conditions

I don't think so, This is sold as a set, blanket,bed,pillow.

Traditional Japanese futons only come in twin and double sizes. Twin will be the smallest width normally.
