These pro-press fittings are another example of quality engineering and execution by Viega. They look good in the toolbox and they perform well on a pipe. I believe that Viega was the first to employ an easy to tell method of determining whether or not a joint is properly pressed on their pro-press fittings. With standard pro-press fittings the rubber o-ring provides an adequate seal to not allow any leakage even if the joint is not pressed. This is a time bomb just waiting to explode, and it probably will at a very inconvenient time. The Viega fittings have an o-ring that is designed to not seal until the joint is pressed, so that if water pressure is applied to a non pressed joint there will be obvious leakage. The only downside is the price. While press fittings can save labor costs, they generally make up for at least part of that in materials cost. They are also a bit harder to find, at least for DIY-ers. While Shark-Bites are available almost everywhere, press fittings are not. That isn't really an issue since most DIY-ers are not going to have the equipment to install press fittings at home. I have access to a Ridgid RP240 and used it at home recently to make some piping repairs. The Viega fittings performed flawlessly.
