Do you need the wall straps to keep it from falling?

Yes. Fully loaded, it twists and shifts even strapped. I actually bought metal plumbing pipe straps and secured it to the wall which works great.

Does this model have dividers?

It comes with 12 dividers, not what I would call an ample supply.

For paperback book users, do the metal racks damage the underside of the book over time?

No. But, the unit doesn't have enough cross bars to hold a standard American paperback book. (I know) Only front and back bars are there. And the front bar is placed too far to hold the front of the book. I used shelf liners. But, great product aside from that.

I wouldn't put many (and just at the bottom. They would have to be the small books as well - DVD size. I love these shelves for my movies. They hold 50-55 (average) DVD / BluRays. I hope this helps.
