Is this model made in Japan?

No "Made in Japan" on the dial or "J" in the model number, so assembled elsewhere (K in the model number). Packaging is lesser quality that my Japanese assembled Seikos. On the plus side a user manual was included and it says the movement was made in Japan (4R36).

Does this watch come with a brand new battery? Just purchased it but it seems to stop working totally and if I put it on seems to start working again.

You bought an Automatic the watch has no battery at all it works by the movement of you. The watch has a weight on the inside that rock back and forth that keeps the mainspring wound. You have to ware the watch for it to keep time. On a full day it should last around 30hr before you need to put it back on.
