Very succinctly presented
A very succinct presentation of the basics of harmonization, but also delves into using richer chords found in jazz. Requires a solid understanding of diatonic scales, keys (major & minor), chord quality, 7th chords and Roman Numeral identifiers. I'm using it as a guide for a teenage student who is learning to compose.

not comprehensive
I find Mark Harrison's style to be overly verbose. He spends about two thirds of the book explaining relatively basic material while the more interesting topics (secondary dominants, borrowed chords, descending bass lines) get rushed treatment at the back. He uses upper structures (slash chords) extensively to harmonize extended chord tones (7th, 9th or 11th) but never considers such things as diminished or augmented chords which are used extensively in some styles. Harmonizing & arranging are two topics difficult to separate, and while he does give some basic treatment of arranging ideas, I feel a book about harmony specific to the piano should deal with arranging more thoroughly. I suggest the Chord Play series by Forrest Kinney for a more comprehensive treatment of this topic.
