Fluval BIO-FX, Biological Aquarium Filter Media Suitable for Most Aquariums and Filters, 5 Liters

It's hard to write a review for something as simple as aquarium media but it just simply works. It doesn't make any bold claims like denitrification but as the ability to house beneficial bacteria it works perfect and is priced very reasonably to fill a sump or a large canister like a FX6.

Hobbiest for over 40 years. I started with plastic bio balls in a sump filter and progressed through many types of bio media over the years. Seachem Matrix has been my staple for years until I found this. As a retired bio medical engineer I've tested them all. Without a doubt this is the best. My setup for testing is a 125g with two Fluval FX2 filters each having 2lbs. of Bio-FX. And it doesn't clog like Seachem does.

These are the perfect bio media for a FX filter. The porosity and larger size compared to other media makes them perfect for the larger FX type filters. The larger size seems like they would allow more flow and prevent compacting like tiny media. There are only a couple of cons. 1) This media is extremely dusty and needs much more rinsing than other bio media. There is a fine sandy grit that comes off these and if you don't clean them enough you could potentially damage your pump/impeller with all that running through the pump. I rinsed them then placed in a bucket and agitated them for a while with a pump to get any grit to settle to the bottom before adding it to the filter baskets. 2) The box comes with enough (if not more) to fill all three baskets on a FX6 and probably have some remaining. If you have a FX4 or FX2 then you will only use 2/3 if not less for the two basket filters. It would be nice if Fluval sold these in single portions for each basket. That way FX6 users would buy 3 while FX4/FX2 users could buy either 2 or just 1 if using with other types of media. Its not that big of a negative but seems like a waste having so much leftover. So far it seems to be doing well in a FX4 after 2 months. I think these are much better than any ceramic rings and far less expensive than bio home media which I've used and doesn't live up to the hype.

This is a very good product with a great rough surface that allows Algea to form and fill the pores. I love it and it will fill several filters..

Nice amount of bio from Fluval with a zip bag to host the media into the canister or sump.

I have bought this media to upgrade my external filtration. I have been using this media for a while now and can honestly say it does what I expected. The water quiality is great. The size of the pack is great so i couldnt fit all of them in my filter (Fluval 407) therefore have some spare media left for next tank or as a replacement. Great value for money!
