Q: Can this be used with a regular portafilter? Or has it got to be a bottomless one?

As long as the portafilter you are using is 54mm then it should work just the same.

yes I think 53mm would be better then you may not have channelling anywhere hope this helps

Yes in my opinion it should be flat. Mine is. Level with the top of the coffee grains in the portafilter basket.
