It has to be almost pitch dark to notice the glow. Any source of light , no matter how small and it seems like they don't glow at all

Not sure about using around a fire pit, but I can tell you that they don't glow in the dark worth a darn. Product is a total rip off. Dan Warren

Can you put them down in a gravel driveway and drive over them?

I wouldn't imagine that they would hold up to that kind of wear. Also, the glow is much less than depicted and you would have to order a huge amount. Each bag holds no more than a handful of rocks.
