No, this is espresso. It's too fine for cafetieres.

Q: Can i use this in a cafetiere?

YES, I make this in a cafetiere everyday. It is NOT expresso coffee, which is a coarser grind, it is specifically ground finer for filtration methods. Yummy!

Q: What is filter coffee? I just want coffee you can make by pouring hot water into it from the kettle

Illy coffee is not instant coffee. You need to filter or push aside the coffee once the coffee has been in contact with the water for a few minutes (3 or 4 mins ideally). All the usual methods work well. I generally use a coffee press (usually called a cafetiere in the UK) but the coffee does not dissolve like instant coffee, so you need to avoid eating the grounds as that would not be pleasant.

Q: Can this be used in a smeg espresso coffee machine?

Yes, any method except capsule systems like Nespresso.
