I wouldn't use it on oil, Duncan, as the polymers in the varnish would likely conflict with the oil. Better to stick with a specific oil varnish.

Q: Is this clear? Is it suitable to finish paper mache and will it make the paper mache harder?

Yes, it dries to a clear matt finish. I use it to varnish acrylic paintings and haven't used it on paper mache but I guess it would be very effective for this and would indeed harden the item nicely.

Q: Will this offer protection in the weatherproofing department?

Absolutely not.It is for artwork for display in interiors.
