Q: Is this 3 pieces 3 yards long each for a total of 9 yards

I have purchased this item a total of 4 times now... and each time I received 3 pieces that are EACH 3 yards long for a TOTAL of 9 yards (324 inches) in each order. I hope this helps because the listing IS a bit confusing or hard to understand exactly what you are getting... I hope this clears it up!!

Q: Would you use this to applique a lot of pieces up to 4 1/2", then hand-quilt them? Would this be enough?

It's a nice mount, you would get a lot of 4 1/2" squares out of it.

Q: Is this suitable as a diffuser for a DIY lightbox in photography?

I'm sorry, but I really could not tell you. I sew......I don't do photography. I will tell you that this fusible polyester came very wrinkled and, since it is fusible, I couldn't iron it flat. I would suggest going to a fabric store like Joann's and asking to see the interfacings. This way you can buy the weight, the thickness and the product that will help you with your project.
