The most complete single CD/cassette "best of" available from The Monkees. Includes all of the group's Top 10 single sides, their '80s comeback singles, rare material, and an informative booklet packed with plenty of photos! Certified at 500 thousand units by the RIAA. (2/01) Unless you're a snob, a good Monkees collection belongs on your shelves, not too far from discs by the Turtles, the Lovin' Spoonful, and other avatars of clean, occasionally rocking '60s Top 40 pop. Greatest Hits is a more than generous stack, bringing together not only the obvious megahits ("I'm a Believer," "Pleasant Valley Sunday," the incredibly propulsive "Valleri") but also a number of tunes that had the bad luck to fall on the wrong side of the act's swift rise and fall. Foremost among these is "Porpoise Song," a lyrically incomprehensible Goffin/King stab at psychedelia that's at once a crass cash-in and one of the loveliest, most fragile sounds to emerge from the American hippie dream. --Rickey Wright Review: Monkees - I love the Monkees!! Enjoy the music of your youth
I was a tween when the Monkees were formed, so they were made for me. Oh, how every girl in my class loved them. Our Girl Scout Troop disbanded because meetings were on Tuesday (the same day The Monkees aired) and the leaders would not change it. We all chose Monkees over scouting. By the time I reached high school and got into Zepelin and Black Sabbath et al, I refused to admit I was even more than vaguely aware of who The Monkees were. After all, they were an establishment-manufactured band. "But I was so much older then, I'm younger than that now." I am really enjoying this CD now that I'm 60. I think any parents out there should introduce their chidren to this fun, innocent music. Mickey Dolenz - sang lead on most of the early songs. While obviously not classically trained, he has a distinctive, pleasant voice. Davy Jones - cute little face, cute little body, cute little voice - cute, cute, CUTE! You can almost hear his voice improving over time - obviously, they decided to give him some voice lessons. Mike Nesmith - the most musically talented of the group, he was totally out of his natural genre. That young Texan should have gone to Nashville instead of Hollywood. Listen to his guitar on songs they let him really play. Peter Tork - seriously, what was the point of Peter? I think he was supposed to be a male "dumb blonde", but there was nothing there. Perhaps he actually was a dumb blonde? I have to believe he was related to one of the producers. So drop your rock-n-roll snobbery, admit that this was a fun group, and enjoy the music!
