I had one of these for years now I had it for the fire department that I was with I got a couple more in programmed them to listen to the weather local fire department channels and then link them together as well just in case me and my family would ever need to use them during the emergency we can talk to each other

At around $20 per radio, the value proposition of the UV-5R is insane. They're relatively well built, transmit and receive clearly in the 1-2 mile range, and are jam-packed with features. The interface is a little confusing and the included booklet isn't great at explaining everything the radio can do, but it's a popular enough model that there's plenty of great guides for it online and in print.I wholeheartedly recommend these to anyone looking for an inexpensive option for tactical field comms or an accessible way to get into the ham radio hobby.

Excellent little radio, especially for the price. Highly customizable, modifiable, programmable. It’s the one that started it all.

Works great for around the home area and neighborhood. I use to keep in touch with the kids.
