I love my "Death Ray" unit. It works and One bulb burnt out after 1 year.
INSTALLED: July 17, 2020 UPDATED: July 16, 2021 - Finally found one bulb out! You will need to get new bulbs with the G23 base and rated at 9 watts. Some bulbs mention the glass also filters out the ozone causing frequency radiation. I continue to be 100% satisfied with this unit after one year.Original Post: Our HVAC system is from the 90s. One of the characteristics we noticed was how the air did have a 'wet basement wall' smell almost a moldy smell. Beginning each season we often would run the AC with the windows open for a day to get things breathed out. This I found out to be referred to as 'dirty sock syndrome'. Good name.My first research about the topic found what others were doing to help reduce or eliminate the problem. Here is a list of different methods and results, you will often need to gain access to the evaporator coil:1 - I could visually see some telltale mildew/mold sitting on the fins of the coil. I first used a coil cleaner like NuCalgon rinse-free cleaner. This is a chemical cleaner that does help clear the fins of dirt and mold. NuCalgon even makes one that is germicidal. RESULT: This does help the issue as it physically and chemically goes after the mold but after a while (about 1 week) the problem slowly returns.2 - Purchased a handheld steam gun that directs a blast of hot scalding steam to the coil fins. Here I treated all of the coil area with steam to kill the mold with heat. (general sterilization temp is 160F and a duration time. Steam is 200F). RESULT: This does greatly help the issue as it 'cooks' the mold but after a while (about 1 week) the problem slowly returns.3 - Spray a disinfectant, hydrogen peroxide, onto the coils. RESULT: This does a good job to knock out the problem but after 1 week the problem slowly returns.4 - Bi-Polar Ionizer. Here is installed a NuCalgon iWave-R ionizer that is designed to be installed right after the airstream from the furnace filter. This device did indeed work well and I use it based on need (smoky cooking odors). This device is intended to charge the air with ions and keep the coils from developing mold. It also continues to clean the air of the home. These units are pricey (around $500) and it does a good job, but I still could tell that the dirty sock problem was slightly there (reasonable level).I installed my REKO UV system on July 16, 2020 and here are some of my remarks:- Unit is rather basic in operation. There is a ballast in the base unit, no OFF/ON switch as the intention is that this unit runs 24/7 and uses UV-C light to kill mold/mildew. You could practically make one yourself with the correct knowledge and parts. But it's important to keep this unit on always.- Installation is also straight forward. Just two hole openings to accommodate the lights.- After installation I debated whether to do a steam and hydrogen peroxide cleanse as I knew that would keep things happy for at least a week. But I was curious to see how the lights could change the situation on their own.-After about 48 hours, there was a noticed reduction in dirty sock syndrome (D.S.S.).-After approx. 100 hours an even better clear up of the D.S.S.-At the time of this writing, approx. 400 hours the air has been kept pleasant and I can only slightly detect D.S.S. when I put my face right into a air vent and inhale.I see from reviews that people have been using these units to make a sterilization chamber for objects. This is a smart technique and I can see how it would be effectual (COVID-19 disinfection). Some people try to use the unit to sterilize the air as it passes (air sterilization not surface). I am not so convinced that this will work as the short span of time the air passes air the light is short. The only way to improve results would be to slow the rate of air flow or increase the intensity of the light (physics at play).I do like to occasionally use the Bi-Polar Ionizer to boost the effectiveness and perhaps that is something you may wish to look into.Best of luck to you in your decision about achieving better air quality for yourself and others!Stay happy, stay healthy!Christopher B.

Purified air
I've installed these in several rental properties in the air handlers above the coils. Makes a big difference in air quality especially during the pandemic. It flat kills mold, mildew spores, airborne bacteria and other germs. One thing to remember is you'll need a 120 VAC source. Since ac handlers are 240 VAC, you'll have to step it down using a small transformer.

Lasted 2 years so far.
Installed 01/2022 reviewing now 11/2024 I notice today the LED indicator trouble light was no longer illuminated and checked the bulbs to find them working perfectly. The light has worked as intended since installation. It’s on a plug that only is powered when the furnace is actually cycling so it’s not on constantly. It does make an electrical whine sound while illuminated that I did not notice previously.

Easy as pie to install!
The media could not be loaded. For the money, you cant beat the price! We have 2 ac sytems, 1.5 ton in mother daughter building and 4 ton in main house. i was suffering from mold mildew in the smaller building which serves as my music studio where i spent a great deal of time until i started getting little black mold specs in phlem running down back of nasal passages, as well as nose running really bad after working in studio for hours. thought nothing of it until visit to respiratory dr who xrayed my chest and nothing was there.. THANK GOD i was terrified, next doc was ENT who scoped me and nothing bad there either. black stuff was dirt mold mildew stuff getting caught up in sinuses.. thats a nevage story now, but back to these units. Carpet in studio was OLD when we moved in 1.5yrs ago, so it was due, and the cause of my ailments. Its going, but after doing loads of research on in duct UV lights for killing mold spores, mildew, viruses, etc. I went on the hunt for a system that was inexpensive but would do the job and that i could install. AC company wanted 400$ plus for a unit and 800$ for installs!! NO WAY! So, after searching and reading, i decided on this system. Luckily, our ductwork, like most homes, are formed from fiberboard not heavy steel or aluminum ducts. The biggest job was in both areas was running a new outlet for the devices to plug into. Not a big deal, just HOT, even in the morning hrs, in fl. its still hot! After outlets were run to where i would install these units, all that was left was to use the template with a LONG utility razor knife to cut the appropriate holes for the lamps. TURN AC / BLOWER /AIR HANDLER UNIT OFF BEFORE CUTTING OR DRILLING INTO ANY DUCT! I chose to place BOTH systems on TOP of the supply ducts so there would be no chance of them falling out! But you MUST USE ALUMINUM ductwork TAPE to keep them firmly down, and most of all SEALED so air wont leak out! Since the fiber board panels are made from several layers, its quite thick, but still easy to cut with long razor utility knife. BUT to keep the pieces from falling into ductwork, i screwed a long sheetrock screw into the centers of the sections to be cut out. Then, as i cut with one hand, i could pull up the square pieces until i reached the inside of the duct itself. Once that was done, just slid the lamps down into their holes, plugged unit in which turns them ON,THEN USING UV PROTECTIVE SUNGLASSSES, I SLIGHTLY LIFTED THE UNIT UP A LITTLE TO CONFIRM BOTH LAMPS WERE LIT, DONT DO THIS PART WITHOUT WEARING UV PROTECTION OVER YOUR EYES OR YOU RISK SERIOUS DAMAGE! All lit, sat unit down flush with duct, aluminum tape all sides down firmly. TURN AC unit back on, and its done! Now, it will take time to 'clean' your air and kill all the bacteria, mold, viruses, etc., but our cats stopped sneezing too! Hey, there are units on here that are bigger, cost hundreds more, but for the same type of unit, and for the reviews this one had, i cant say anything negative. And, it was kind of fun to do too. HEED ALL THE UV WARNINGS!!! SHUT ALL ELECTRIC IF YOUR DOING ANY KIND OF WIRING, SHUT OFF AIR HANDLER BEFORE CUTTING, TAKE YOUR TIME, THINK IT OUT. Hope my review helps.. any questions, i dont go on here much, but if i get any questions, i'll be glad to help as much as i can.

This thing really works!
This was recommended by a friend who’s in the HVAC business. It’s compact and straightforward. Very easy to install. Within a couple of hours, the air in our home smelled more fresh and clean. For its size, it really is a workhorse. I feel comfortable knowing that it’s taking allergens out of the air in my house, and it seems to be doing so powerfully. It’s a really good value for the money, too. Very pleased.
