Great accessory to your modern laptop
When I first was on the market for a CDROM drive, I wanted to find something portable to compliment my Macbook Air M1. I was afraid I wasn't going to find anything. I came across this CD drive and was amazed at it. It worked with my Macbook Air M1 just fine. I only wanted to confirm that it forces you to update the region number. I was not expecting this, so if you were looking for a way to watch your DVDs or Blu-ray, I would give this some thought. Most DVDs/Blu-rays in the U.S. will be fine, but if you get your DVDs from overseas, that might be a hurdle for you. It limits you to 4 updates of the region code.

Unit is on, but not working with computer
So I tried it on a few days after I got it. There is no indication on the screen, my desktop is not recognizing it.. I checked every other way to plug it. I can press the button to open and insert a CD inside, but the driver is not showing up anywhere. I have to return it, frustrating to waste time like this.

Region 2 Out of the Box, Short Cables, Still a Good Value
The cables that come with this are very short. When I use the drive, I plug the cables into the front USB ports on my PC's case (Lian Li O11 Dynamic) because I don't want to have to move my case and reach behind it every time I want to use the drive. The cables are so short that the drive has to be facing the rear of the case, there is not enough slack to turn the drive all the way around so that it ejects toward the front of the case. Not a huge deal, but I mean come on.It's actually two cables plugged in to the case by the way, one is USB-A on the back of the drive which goes to my PC case's USB-C port, the other is like a round power connector in the rear of the drive, which goes to a USB A port on my PC's case. The drive was set to region 2 out of the box but I changed it to region 1 and haven't had any issues. I have used this drive to make perfectly legal backup copies strictly for archival purposes not to be shared, sold, or distributed without express granted permission, and it does the job just fine. I think it's a bit slower than my ASUS internal Blu Ray drive but I kind of expected that and it's not a big deal for me.I'd say this is worth the money. I also like that it's slim and it doesn't have a big power brick or wall wart, it's just two cables that plug into your PC or laptop which makes it easy to bring it with you for example in a laptop bag.

Drive Just Clicks and Doesn't Connect
I ordered this external BluRay drive and upon connecting it, all the drive did was rhythmically click until I unplugged it. Amazon helped troubleshoot it, and I even tried the multiple connectors that came with the drives, but had no luck connecting the drive on either of the computers in my home. Thinking that it either arrived damaged or defective, I returned it and had a replacement within two days. Unfortunately, the replacement did the exact same thing. This product is a dud. Amazon made good on the return, but I'd avoid this product - it just doesn't work.

Beware: box does not match product description
I ended up returning the first one of these I ordered because the box does not fit the product description and I was afraid to open it for fear I couldn't return it. With the second one that arrived, I opened the box and found that while the box said it was merely a DVD player and said nothing about it being a USB-C connection, it was, in fact, all that. That was really frustrating. Happily, the Blu-ray works fine and it does have the USB-C connection which is crucial for use with my Macbook. While it works fine, I am only giving it 3 stars because the whole situation (which Amazon handled beautifully) was really not necessary if the packaging was correct. Seems a bit dodgy that it doesn't match the product inside.
