No you need this after you use your toothpaste. I am nurse, I had risk of gum disease and my gums somethimes selling bleeding, after I use it my gums are healthy again. Please use your toothpaste then use after , do not eat drink or rinse. Is this safe for porcelain veneers?

Yes, Essentials Toothpaste is safe for porcelain veneers.

How abrasive is this toothpaste? My gums don't tolerate conventional toothpastes so I have to use something that has a low abrasion index.

It does not feel abrasive at all. My gums feel wonderful after using this toothpaste (despite the xylitol in it). My teeth feel clean and the herbs really keep my gums healthy. I've had gum problems in the past (not due to abrasive toothpaste) and this is by far the best for healing gums and keeping them healthy.
