Q: It says it's an sed drive. does this feature turn on by default? if so, will it affect the performance of the drive?

The device is SED enabled all of the time. It does not affect the performance of the device, at least has not in my usage

Q: Will this work in a usb hard drive enclosure without the adapter or tape?

I used it with a USB hard drive enclosure with power to transfer data from another drive. It transferred the data pretty quick.

Q: does it require SATA-molex adapter or pin mod for the power disable feature?

Yes, and the adapter is included in the box the drives are shipped in.

Q: Will this work with sata cables with 5 wires without the adapter?

I have 5 of these and they do not work on my corsair rm850e power supply. I also am not a fan of these adapters, so I used kapton tape to cover the 3rd pin and they work fine with the power supply now.
