Good Lens for a great price.
Good Quality lens with a great zoom, at this price point it's outstanding. Was used with a intro level DSLR, d3100, so i was unable to test the auto focus feature. The manual focus was smooth and i was able to take great quality photos of moving subjects playing sport. I would highly recommend this lens to entry level photographers.

Can perform very well with the right techniques
This is a surprisingly good lens not only for the price the optics are good, well on lens I have. I have several lenses some are vintage legacy lenses i.e. Zeiss, Schneider and modern lenses. I have experience with the use of fine optics this lens really cannot compare directly with such but it does hold its own. If you require the need for fast focus and or low light, this lens is not for you. If you take your time with reasonable light a little like the old days of Film and a steady hand with the correct techniques you will get a result that is good in some cases very good.

Cheap construction, but amazing value for money
First the bad points: the construction of this lens is lightweight plastic, it feels cheap, it drops down to f5 or below fairly rapidly as you zoom in, and being a Nikon "G" series lens it has no aperture ring so you can't use it on a trusty old manual camera. But for £75 what do you expect? Then the good. Other reviewers say that it is not sharp, or is "soft", but looking at the shots I have just taken on my 10 MegaPixel D200, at between 70mm and 200mm focal lengths, blown up to 100% magnification on the screen I have absolutely no complaints, as it is pin sharp to my eyes; and the images are good and contrasty too. On a moderately bright over-cast day I set the camera to ISO 200 and let it worry about exposure, which resulted in shutter speeds between 1/150th and 1/320th and apertures from about f6 to f9 as the clouds came and went. Hand-held results were very slightly blurred at the longer focal length/slower speed end of the range, but otherwise the fact that its maximum aperture is f4-5.6 proved not to be a problem at all. Other reviewers have criticised its auto-focus speed. Yes, if it is currently set at 5 feet and you point it at something 300 feet away then it takes a little while to get there; but if it is more or less at the right distance already it snaps into focus faster than I can blink. Also, unlike some AF lenses, the focus ring turns through quite a large arc so focusing it manually is easy. It starts to get a bit tricky to use hand-held in the 200mm to 300m range, partly because the zoom barrel extends such a long way and partly because it is so light-weight; but that is not a criticism of the lens, rather a fact of life - if you want to use a long lens you need to use a tripod, or to shell out 5x as much money for a Vibration Reduction (VR) version. Remember though that VR doesn't freeze your subject motion, only your camera-shake; if I were going to spend that much I'd save up a little longer and buy a non-VR f2.8 70-200m zoom instead. Last saturday I was standing next to someone who had a monster Nikkor 70-400mm f4.5-5.6 VR zoom on his camera, about £900 pounds worth, and he was lamenting that he struggled with its intended use for wildlife photography because it didn't give him a fast enough shutter speed. I looked down at my little plastic toy which cost 1/12th as much, yet gives nearly the same focal length and aperture range ... and, I confess, felt rather smug. In summary: not the best money can buy, but surely far and away the best value for money in its focal length range.

Good lens but double check camera compatibility
After receiving the Nikon Nikkor AF 70-300mm f4-5.6 G I was pleasantly surprised with its build quality; especially given its comparatively low price. I did however notice that the "Autofocus to Manual Focus" switch found on other autofocus lenses was missing which (being new to DSLR's) led me to think that perhaps the auto focus feature was controlled within the menus in the camera body. After attaching the lens to my Nikon D3000, the lens clicked into place with ease and as expected. Switching on the D3000 and taking a few snaps at various settings provided what I thought were very good quality pictures but still no sign of an autofocus feature. Upon consulting the instruction pamphlet it very clearly states that the autofocus feature does not work with the D5000, D3000, D60, D40 but that manual focus is possible with all Nikkon DSLRs.

Not for the Professional or Dedicated Wildlife Photographer
This lens is the subject of many reviews that castigate its build quality and performance. It is certainly cheaply made and slow. But it is tough enough to survive as a lightweight zoom that takes excellent pictures provided that you recognise its limitations. The dedicated twitcher will not buy this lens, but will probably try to discourage the rest of us who would otherwise get great pleasure from casual photography and don't want to be burdened with heavy gear and high prices. If you can afford the 18-200 VR the convenience is irrefutable. Otherwise - as a budget addition to a standard zoom - this lens is both practical and surprisingly good.

You get what you pay for.
I am a retired optical instrument designer, and have been an amateur photographer for more than 50 years. I bought this lens to complement a Nikkor AF-S 18-200mm on a D7000 body. A careful test (foliage at 50 yards in bright sunshine, ISO 100 to minimize shake, on a heavy tripod) shows this lens to have higher resolving power at all focal lengths between 200mm and 300mm and from f/5.6 to f/11 than the 18-200mm lens: exactly what I was hoping for on reading the spec . The lens will not win you any substantial prizes in a wildlife/ bird photography competition (probably no telephoto lens costing less than £1,000 will these days) but for most amateur photography, (landscape or portrait) it's as good as (probably better than) you need. At the price it is all that I'd hoped for. Full marks.

Quite often people dismiss cheap lenses (under $200). While there are certainly bad lenses in this price range, there are often lenses that are surprisingly good. Many of these are Nikon's cheaper consumer lenses. I bought this lens for use on my Nikon D700 and D40 until I get around to buy a nicer telephoto, which would cost significantly more. I wasn't expecting a whole lot, but I have been pleasantly surprised with the quality of the pictures for the price. The sharpness and colors are significantly better than another Cheap lens at 70-210mm (can't remember the brand, it was an off-brand). There are a few drawbacks to this lens, of course. This lens does auto-focus on cameras with AF and G capability, but must be manually focused on cameras that do not. This includes some other 35mm SLRs as well as Nikon's newer consumer SLRs that don't contain a focusing motor. These cameras would include the D40, D40x, D60, D3000, D3100, and D5000. I own a D40 and can use this lens on it, but have to focus manually. You also can't adjust the aperture on old manual-focus cameras. There is also no image stabilization, therefore to take consistent sharp images in low light you need to use a fast shutter speed, which may not always be easy to do. This isn't the fastest lens either, starting at f/4 at 70mm and f/5.6 at 300mm. Because of both of these omissions this lens works best in good light unless you have a camera that performs well at higher-ISO settings or you have a flash that can compensate. I've also noticed that the autofocus is a bit slow, as well as loud. It's not as bad when the focus adjustments are small however, making it usually fine for tracking moving subjects, it just becomes inconvenient if for example you are tracking a soccer player and at some point accidently focus on the background and have to go back. The final drawback I noticed is there seems to be a little bit of distortion and softness as you reach 300, but it's acceptable considering the price of this lens. Overall this is a great deal. There are some conveniences and frills that are left out, as mentioned above, but considering this is only $130 I feel you can't go wrong. If you don't have a telephoto for your Nikon and considering this because you don't want to spend $500+, buy this. It's worlds better than nothing. Just keep in mind that the autofocus will not work if you have a D40/40x/60/3000/3100/5000.
