A beautiful mid-like expansion
Do not get me wrong the title may seem misleading, but there is just something about this expansion where I have seen people love or hate. I fall into the middle. Lets get some things out of the way first:-Artwork/Design - it is peak. Probably one of the most artistic expansions out there. Every card is color coded like a "Rave". Very colorful an within the theme of 2099. If you had all the comics like me you won't be disappointed.-Mechanics - We get "cyber-mod" which is just a fancy word from the SHIELD expansion that is the villain/shield level. If you loved that expansion for that mechanic you will love that here. We also get things like Fated-Future/Uru Enchanted weapon. The Uru-Enchanted weapon forces you to review a number of cards from the villain deck to see if your fight will succeed or fail. It can be fun, but also can make the game harder too. Fated-Future allows you to place a card on the bottom of your deck instead of discard pile.-Heroes - Ravage 2099, Spider-Man 2099, Doom 2099, Hulk 2099 and finally Ghost Rider 2099-Bad guys - 2 villain groups and 2 masterminds including the Sinister 6 which is 6 tactics! 4 Schemes.-Things I love - HEROES! Hulk is really really good. Sending wounds undercover is genius. Honestly this Hulk feels like the best Hulks from World War Hulk. Sinister 6 Mastermind keeps the replayability fresh. Villain groups are ok and nothing seems too crazy like X-Men 92 group from other expansions. Certain Villains' also get Cyber Mods as well. Also the Schemes. These Schemes might be some of the best since the baseball one from new mutants. Become President of the US or Mega Corps for example. The schemes are alone the reason to buy this set if not the artwork.-Things I hated - Oh boy. This is where someone will disagree because I fell the same about Messiah Complex with "clone". That is some of the mechanics are just really hard to hit "organically". If I have to give you an example its straight up Ghost Rider 2099. He gets cyber-mods at 1 or 3 cards played in the same color suit for a higher cost card. To help with this you can send him straight "undercover" but doing that forces you to forgo the 2 attack you could have in your hand by drafting him. You do get +2 attack this turn though. I feel the same about Doom 2099 as well.Playing Shield expansion as much as I did you get some bonker shield or hydra levels and it just feels like its completely toned down here. Same with the Uru Enchanted Weapon. Then that difficulty is shifted into the scheme or mastermind which if you hate the complexity in that you may not like this. Don't get me wrong I said I loved these things, but the core of the game is the heroes drafting and fighting villains.Final thoughts - It is still a good set worth picking up. I feels like it tries a lot of things, but doesn't have anything in it besides hulk that is life changing. I own about 75% of all Marvel Legendary and I would rank it in the middle where Venom is one of my favorite small box sets and Spider-Man Homecoming is my least favorite.
