The Timetables of History: A Horizontal Linkage of People and Events

Best go to timeline cheat sheet ever!
I have the 3rd edition and used it for grad school. It was so useful I had to gift one to someone else going back to school. Easy grid layout of multiple subjects divided chronologically by era and year. It's one of those books that once you have it, you are mad no one told you this format existed. Room for personal notes. Yeah, it's a big book, but history is long.

Invaluable Reference Book for Students & the Well-Informed
THE TIMETABLES OF HISTORY is an INVALUABLE reference book and is just as important as a good dictionary for all students and the well-informed.This wealth of information is well-indexed and uniquely organized as a seven-column table of critical categories of historic events. The third edition starts at -5,000 years BC in Mesopotamia and Egypt. The progress of world cultures are continually impacted by the categories outlined chronologically in TIMETABLES OF HISTORY: (1.) Influential leaders and political events (2.) Literature & Theater (3.) Religion, Philosophy, Learning (4.) Visual Arts (5.) Music (6.) Scientific and technological inventions (7.) Daily Life, innovations, trends.THE TIMETABLES OF HISTORY will clarify lessons and media based on history with a broader understanding of a specific era, lifestyles, significant events, and give insight to how those events moved in a logical tandem to influence history and change the world. If you plan to see an historic movie or read the classics, your entertainment value and understanding will be enhanced by glancing at this book's thumbnail synopsis of the era portrayed beforehand. The mass of information is exceptionally and uniquely organized. I have read THE TIMETABLES OF HISTORY from cover to cover, and continue to refer to it for information. My copy is well-used, highlighted, underlined, and new material has been hand-printed in the margins. Hopefully, the publishers will update and re-publish both a print and digital edition every decade.

Excellent book
One of my all-time favorite resources. I had to get rid of my first copy because of mold. So glad to have this again - and with so many more years added!

The way we should all have been taught History.
If this book has a vice, it is simply you might forget what you came to find, as your eye catches some fascinating confluence of events hitherto missing from your understanding of the past. I have frequently beeen distracted for long periods wandering the endlessy intriguing pages of this indispensable reference.Have a child who is bored by history, and asking why does it matter? Are you puzzled by a historical event that is often quoted as important but seems irrelevant to you? Are you a writer? Editor? Teacher? A reader who loves to understand the setting and times of a novel or novelist or other writer? This book is for all of you. Like any comprehensive work, there are omissions; gaps and small shortcomings. But if you only have three reference books, they should be a dictionary, a thesaurus and The Timetables of History.

all in an easy to read chart format
This is an invaluable resource to put events in their cultural contexts. It is organized by early time periods and then by specific years, all in an easy to read chart format. This book allows one to see and understand the relevance of people, discoveries, politics, the arts, etc. to other components and aspects of the time. It is interesting to look through without a particular purpose, or it is helpful to look up a certain year, event or person since there is a cross reference in the back. I have two editions of Timetables of History, and recently bought this one for my college student grandson. I recommend it for anyone interested in history.

Great reference for all history
I used to own the burgundy version of this book. I think the old one has a slightly better layout, but this book is a great reference if you are trying to show culture, art, architecture, language and history of an area. It was always fun looking to see what else was happening around the world, when I homeschooled my daughter. Gives a broader picture than most history books into arts and culture. The history books are still great for specifics to a place and/or time.

Excellent Resource Book or Just Fun Reading
I borrowed an older copy of this book from a co-worker and loved it - they should use this book as a resource in middle and high schools !I love this book because it lets you explore all the happenings across the world as time progressed - from politics to architecture to inventions. I think that most folks would be pretty surprised by alot of the information - especially how advanced the world was in the B.C. years, astounding !I would suggest to anyone from teens to teachers to anyone interested in this type of information to take a look through this special book.
