Love Hoya!
I have the first version of this filter which is great and this time I bought it through Amazon and got lucky and received the second version which comes with a small screw in dial. The version 2 seems to be a little sturdier and bigger. Overall I love Hoya glass it’s really top notch equal to Tiffen in my eyes. Great well known brand you can trust.

It works reasonably well
If you have read many reviews about this filter, I am sure that you have heard about the cross that can appear across your photo although I feel it more closely resembles an "X" laid on it's side with some warping to it. And yes, this X does definitely occur, especially with the wide angle lenses. However, this problem does not occur at all adjustments. For example, if you are shooting a 21mm lens, you can still get about 5 stops out of the filter without seeing any intensity distortions. If you are shooting at 27mm, you can get 6 stops out of this filter without any problems. Once you get to about 70mm and above, you can really get at least 7.5 stops or maybe 8 with no issues. The big plus I felt regarding this filter is that I did not find any color distortions or chromatic abberations as I have seen with other ND filters I have had previously. In addition, this method is using two polarized filters which can be very nice with removing glare, especially out of water shots, while slowing down the shooting speed to get the nice smooth and calming look in your shot.

Nice little thing. Though a quick note.
I picked this up for a variety of reasons. One mainly being long exposure landscape photography with my X-Pro1. One note was addended to the lens filter worth noting:"The practical exposure range and light transmittance will vary depending on the situation. When using the filter near or at MIN. A cross-like dark pattern will appear across the image and cannot be eliminated. This is a property of the structure of the filter."I'll upload the Hoya note to the photos. I haven't had the chance to try the lens filter yet. I'll take a long exposure shot within the next month or so and share the result when I get the chance.Overall the build looks pretty solid and the variable density is really variable with markers indicating the degree. The case is different, too, featuring a nice large (for a 52mm) cylindrical screw cap case as opposed to the square flip top ones.Review to be revised when I get some actually output from this thing. I'll be sure to share that, too.

Know what you are getting
Just got this filter last week. Before ordering it I did fair amount of research and realized that ND filters come with set of issues, vignetting, possibly a dark X in the picture, a dark blob in middle of the picture, color warming, etc.So when I used this filter, I was a bit shocked because within couple of hours of use, ALL THE PROBLEMS that I feared, showed up, the vignetting, dark X in middle of the picture, and color warming.Color warming is the most annoying of all. Sure if I spend enough time processing the picture, I can tone it down, but I don't want to be spending hours processing the picture.Having said that, the problem DOES NOT OCCUR every single time. There were occasions where the filter actually WORKED. Mainly with even cool light at a waterfall, and sunset on overcast day where the light was cool, it did allow me to take long exposures without ruining the picture. So the lesson here is that there are mainly NO ND filters that are issue free. The good thing about the problems mentioned above is that I could see them right away after I took the shots in the view screen of my camera, so I could change settings and respond. It would have been terrible if I missed my shots and problem showed up only during processing. So in my view, it is good to have this filter and use it sparingly. When it DOES WORK and you get a shot you really want to capture, it would allow you to capture something magical which otherwise you won't be able to. Also, this particular one does not break your bank. However, if you use it frequently, you are bound to ruin many good shots.

Not useful on Sigma 30mm 1.4
Overall Conclusion:I bought this variable ND filter for my Sigma 30mm 1.4 lens. A variable ND filter is a useful tool if you intend to take video at the "correct" shutter speed. This filter was creating the X-effect very early, making the range of the variable ND very limited and thus not useful. I did not like the picture quality either. I highly recommend the Tiffen variable ND instead (see my other review). How it Works:Using the filter is very easy. You screw it on and then you turn the end of the two-part filter to adjust to the ND strength you need. The filter shows you a scale on both sides, so you do not flip your camera to see on which setting you are (this is the case with Tiffen filter and the only advantage of the Hoya).Effectiveness:I was experience the x-effect (shadowing of the image from two, opposite corners) very early - perhaps at 50% strength. This rendered the filter useless to me. In comparison, the Tiffen filter is useable almost across the full scale at creates the x-effect at perhaps 80%.Price:For me, the price does not matter. I would not use this product, even if it was priced at GBP 20. I rather pay more to get a Tiffen filter which I can trust. If this review was helpful, please click the button below.

Superbe filtre

Excelent for daytime time-lapse
I was unsure which brand to purchase for a long time finally, decided with the Hoya, I am very happy with this product.I have used this for Daytime Time-lapse using Canon 7D + magiclantern RAW video frame override excellent results. Used this on my Canon 15-85mm, there has been no binding when removing. One point, you can use with Hoya circular polarizer with variable ND on top.But not the other way around.

they are good pieces of kit
I have one hoya variable for another camera and to be honest, they are good pieces of kit. Lots of people complain about the cross that appears on the high dense end of the scale but I don't feel the need to expose that long where that could be a problem. I think this is a good alternative to carry the square filter plates, this is far less mess and quite easy to use.

Great if you don’t need to use in extreme bright conditions
I bought the Hoya as it was recommended by a few but I wish I hadn’t! It’s great if you only need to dial in up to half way, but anywhere beyond that you start to get the ‘X’ effect which ruins your footage and photos. The shadowing caused has ruined a fair bit of my footage so I will be swapping this out for something else.
