I use it year round. I figured it can't be good for the grass to drink that anytime of the year. I don't know however if the grass changes it sensitivity in the winter.

I’d probably try 2 or 3 packages. I think that would be about 6 or 9 rocks total. I do not think you’ll need to replace them as often as the directions recommend. I’m still using my original 6 rocks a year later.
